Experience: Chosen Dance Company 2001 - Current Artistic Director/ Choreographer/ Performer/ Writer Theatrical:· The Gate Called Straight (2011 – 2012)I was asked to create Hip-Hop choreography for the opening number of the gospel version of the Wizard of Oz play. · Hip Hop with a Conscience (2008)I conceived, wrote, directed and choreographed this repertory work for my dance company, Chosen. · From Tha Hip (2006) I conceived, choreographed and written in collaboration with Albert Innurato my first main stage play that was produced by the Prince Music Theater in Association with Chosen Dance Company and directed by Rebel Theater’s Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj. · Hip Hopstory (2003) I was co-choreographer for Kwesi' Johnson’s Hip-Hop play that toured the U.K. · Belittled Pieces of the Puzzle (2001)I created an evening length work in collaboration with poet Joseph Middleton Jr. on behalf of the Painted Bride Art Center and as a part of a residency at Temple University · Welcome to America (1997)I conceived, choreographed and directed an auto-biographical work using Hip-Hop movement and Spoken Word which was presented as a part of Rennie Harris' Puremovement Repertory works. Meet Our Guest Jazz Instructor
Karen Cleighton has a BFA from The University of the Arts, in Dance Education, where she was on faculty in the musical theater and dance departments. Karen also taught jazz and tap at Temple University in their Musical Theatre program.
Ms. Cleighton has her New Jersey teaching certification, and is currently teaching at Chartertech HS for the Performing Arts in their dance and musical theatre programs.
Karen has choreographed many professional show which include "Thoroughly Modern Millie”, Media Theatre, (which landed her a Barrymore nomination for best choreography in a musical), Spelling Bee”, Media Theatre. and “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”, East Lynne Theatre. Her choreography has also been seen at many universities which include DeSales University and The University of The Arts. She has choreographed "Oliver", "Crazy For You", "A My Name is Alice", Berlin to Broadway", Bat Boy, "Nine" and "Legally Blonde". In her "spare time" she works at various entertainment companies providing dancers, choreographing, producing shows and DJing and is a certified Zumba and Spin instructor!
